1. The Boer War 1899-1902 (Essential Histories)
Paperback by Gregory Fremont-Barnes. Victorious in its previous campaigns in Africa against native armies, Britain now confronted an altogether different foe. The Boers proved to be formidable opponents, masterfully compensating for inferior numbers with grim determination, resourcefulness and strong religious faith. Their mobility, expert use of cover, and knowledge of the terrain, in which they employed powerful long-range magazine rifles, gave them initial advantages. By contrast the British suffered from inadequate transport, insufficient mounted troops and poor intelligence. Despite marshalling the immense resources of their empire, the British were to be severely tested in a war which one general described as ‘the graveyard of many a soldier’s reputation’.

6. Commando: A Boer Journal Of The Boer War
Paperback by Deneys Reitz. (Revised in May 2009) Deneys Reitz was 17 when the Boer War broke out in 1899. Reitz describes that he had no hatred of the British people, but "as a South African, one had to fight for one's country." Reitz had learned to ride, shoot and swim almost as soon as he could walk, and the skills and endurance he had acquired during those years were to be made full use of during the war. He fought with different Boer Commandos, where each Commando consisted mainly of farmers on horseback, using their own horses and guns. Commando describes the tumult through the eyes of a warrior in the saddle. Reitz was fortunate to be present at nearly every one of the major battles of the war. Commando is a straightforward narrative that describes an extraordinary adventure and brings us a vivid, unforgettable picture of mobile guerrilla warfare, especially later in the war as General Smuts and men like Reitz fought on, braving heat, cold, rain, tiring horses, and lack of food, clothing, and boots.

8. Bushveldt Carbineers: the War Against the Boers in South Africa and the 'Breaker' Morant Incident
Paperback by George Witton. A war without pity on the South African veldt George Witton was a member of the Bushveldt Carbineers-a mounted, highly mobile unit trained to hunt down its Boer counterparts of the Commandos during the Boer War at the turn of the 20th century. Theirs was no 'gentleman's war' which took account of for fair play and the rules of war-it was a 'kill or be killed' existence of ambushes, night attacks and summary executions in which neither side could claim non-participation. War became a personal business for Witton and his fellow Carbineers-Morant and Handcock-as brother officers were found murdered and brutalised and prisoners were caught bearing their personal effects. Matters came to a head with the infamous courts-marshal of some of the Bushveldt Carbineers and the execution of some and imprisonment of others in a scandal that rocked the British Empire and struck to the core of the relationship between the mother country and one of its most loyal colonies.

9. Breaker Morant
DVD featuring Edward Woodward, Bryan Brown & Lewis Fitz-Gerald. Personal revenge or act of war? Crazed soldiers or political scapegoats? Winner of 10 Australian Academy Awards, this powerful film directed by the Oscar®-nominated Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies, Driving Miss Daisy) continues to stir audiences with its timeless themes of wartime morality and military hypocrisy. Based on a true story, Edward Woodward (TV's The Equalizer) unforgettably stars as the controversial folk hero and Renaissance man Lt. Harry "Breaker" Morant. As South Africa's Boer War draws to a close, Morant and two fellow Australian soldiers are court-martialed for murder. Their only hope lies in a small-town lawyer who fights passionately for their lives.
